Celebrating community milestones and planning for a brighter future in Docklands

These past few months in Docklands have been marked by the launch of several pivotal initiatives that promise to enhance our neighbourhood’s vibrancy and connectivity.

I had the privilege to take part in these events and wanted to share the progress and invite all residents to get involved in shaping the future of Docklands.

Since launching earlier in the year, Community3008 has started monthly meetings with presentations from the City of Melbourne, Victoria Police, and other invited guests to help inform the Docklands community.

This new community group is a significant outcome of the Docklands Summit and represents a vital step towards stronger community representation.

The meeting saw a diverse group of residents come together to discuss issues, share ideas, and plan for the future. Community3008 aims to provide a unified voice for Docklands residents, ensuring our concerns and aspirations are effectively communicated to the City of Melbourne.

I encourage all residents to join Community3008, participate in its activities, and contribute to making our neighbourhood more cohesive and responsive to our needs.

The Docklands Youth Zone also launched this month, providing a dedicated space for young people to connect, learn, and innovate through technology and art. This initiative was designed by and for young people and is led by the team Sarascare.

The Youth Zone offers various programs, from coding workshops and robotics to performing arts and dance, aimed at fostering leadership and creativity among Docklands’ youth.

I had the privilege of attending the launch event and was inspired by the enthusiasm and talent of Anya and the young participants. The Docklands Youth Zone is a testament to our commitment to nurturing the next generation and providing them with the resources they need to thrive. I urge all young residents and their families to explore the opportunities available at the Youth Zone. You can find out more.

Another exciting development is the launch of The Cauldron – Craft Connect, an inclusive arts and crafts program designed to bring residents together through creativity. This program caters to people of all skill levels and offers a platform to share skills, learn new crafts, and build social connections. From knitting and quilting to card making and recycled toy creation, The Cauldron has something for everyone.

Programs like The Cauldron are vital for fostering a sense of community and belonging. They allow residents to engage in meaningful activities, share their talents, and support one another. I encourage everyone to participate, whether as a learner or a teacher, and help build a vibrant and connected community.

While these short-term initiatives are essential, it is crucial that we also focus on the medium- and long-term actions identified at the Docklands Summit. We need a comprehensive strategy for Docklands that supports our transition from the development authority to full council integration. This strategy should address critical issues such as infrastructure development, environmental sustainability, and economic growth.

One immediate area that requires attention is the clean-up of Harbour Esplanade. Improving this central area will enhance the aesthetics and usability of our waterfront, making it a more attractive space for residents and visitors alike.

As we continue to implement the outcomes of the Docklands Summit, I want to extend my heartfelt congratulations to all members of the Docklands Stakeholder Group and the broader community for their involvement and dedication. Your efforts are paving the way for a brighter, more inclusive future.

I also invite all residents to share their ideas and feedback on what they would like to see in Docklands. Your input is invaluable in shaping a neighbourhood that meets our collective needs and aspirations. Together, we can build a Docklands that is not only a great place to live and work but also a vibrant, welcoming community for all.
